U.S. President Donald Trump praised actress Sydney Sweeney after confirming her registration as a member of the Republican Party, amid widespread controversy over her advertising campaign for the "American Eagle" jeans line.
During a conversation with reporters in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Trump said: "Oh, now I love her ad. You will be amazed at the number of Republicans. I wouldn't have known this, but I'm glad you told me about it," adding: "If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is great," according to the "New York Post."
Public voter records reviewed by the newspaper show that Sweeney, star of the series "Euphoria" and "The White Lotus," has been registered with the Republican Party in Florida since June 2024.
The ad promoting Sweeney's new jeans has sparked a stir on social media, with some leftist critics likening the campaign to "Nazi propaganda," claiming it promotes concepts of racism and eugenics.
The ad plays on the manipulation between the words "jeans" (Jeans) meaning pants, and "genes" (Genes) meaning hereditary genes, where Sweeney explains that genes are passed from parents to children, then says "My genes are blue" referring to the color of the jeans.
In another scene, the word "jeans" on a billboard changes to "jeans" for pants.
Several Republican figures defended Sweeney and attacked the criticism directed at her, with Trump’s communications director Stephen Chung describing the backlash as "wild cancel culture."
So far, Sweeney has not issued any official comment on the controversy surrounding her ad or her political affiliation.
