The new Syrian government, emerging from the post-previous regime phase, has appointed Dr. Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, within the governmental lineup that has attracted wide attention locally and internationally. Al-Shaibani was born in 1987 in Al-Hasakah Governorate, northeast Syria, and hails from the Beni Shaiban tribe. He moved early in his life to the capital, Damascus, where he completed his university education and graduated in 2009 from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, English Language and Literature Department at Damascus University. From revolutionary arenas to sovereign positions With the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011, Al-Shaibani was among the first to join the ranks of the revolutionary movement, participating in its various stages without interruption. He contributed to the establishment of several political entities, most notably the Syrian Rescue Government, where he held several responsibilities including establishing the Political Affairs Administration. In the following years, his name emerged in political and humanitarian aspects, contributing to enhancing cooperation with international organizations, notably the United Nations and its humanitarian agencies, and facilitating the entry of humanitarian aid into northwestern Syria. An accomplished academic journey In addition to his political activities, Al-Shaibani pursued his academic career, obtaining a master's degree in Political Science and International Relations from a Turkish university in 2022, and is currently completing his Ph.D. in the same specialization. He also recently completed the final stage of an MBA at an American university. Foreign policy dossier in the hands of a former revolutionary The appointment of Asaad al-Shaibani as Minister of Foreign Affairs comes at a critical time for Syria, as the new government seeks to diplomatically reposition the country and rebuild relations with the international community after years of isolation and conflict. It is expected that his political and humanitarian experience, along with his academic background, will play a pivotal role in reshaping Syrian foreign policy during the transitional phase.
