University of Damascus Maintains Its Position Among the Top 2500 Universities According to the Global Webometrics Ranking

In statements to SANA today, Friday, Dr. Marwan Al-Rai, the ranking office director at the University of Damascus, explained that the university ranked first locally according to the Global Webometrics ranking in its second edition for 2025, which is released at the end of July every year.
Dr. Al-Rai also mentioned that the university had for the first time made it to the list of the top 2500 universities worldwide in the first edition for 2025 of this ranking, issued last January, and maintained its presence in the second edition, which witnessed a significant change in the ranking of many Syrian universities and research centers.
Dr. Al-Rai pointed out that the Webometrics ranking is based on three different criteria:
- The qualitative scientific research criterion, which depends on the quality of the research published by the University of Damascus, and the university has maintained its position within this criterion.
- The scientific and knowledge scope criterion of the university's website, in which the university has reached a very advanced position compared to the lower ranks of other Syrian university websites and research centers.
- The criterion of calculating the university's researchers, in which the university slightly declined in this edition due to purely administrative reasons.
Dr. Al-Rai mentioned that the University of Damascus is the only Syrian university present among the top 2500 universities worldwide in this ranking, marking its best achievement in this ranking, which includes 43 Syrian universities and research centers for this year.
It is worth noting that the Webometrics ranking is a biannual ranking issued at the end of January and July of each year by the Cybermetrics Lab, part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and includes 32,000 universities worldwide.
