United Nations: Military buildup around Tripoli threatens civilian safety

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya expressed its deep concern today, Saturday (August 30, 2025), over the continued spread of heavy weapons and troops around the capital, Tripoli, describing this development as "dangerous" and a direct threat to civilians.
The mission's statement mentioned that discussions regarding security arrangements in Tripoli have been ongoing since last June, under the supervision of the Presidential Council and within the framework of the Ceasefire Committee and the Security and Military Committee, with full support from the United Nations.
The mission emphasized that achieving security requires addressing disputes through dialogue, while also confirming progress in several files related to the Government of National Unity, despite the risks arising from military escalation.
It also called on all parties to adopt dialogue as the only option for resolving conflicts and to exercise the highest degree of restraint to avoid any confrontations that may endanger civilians, warning that any use of force could have severe consequences.
It clarified that the recent military buildup has become an increasing concern for the residents of the capital, urging the authorities to take measures to prevent the outbreak of clashes and protect infrastructure.
The mission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting mediation efforts and working with various parties to maintain the sustainability of the ceasefire, stressing the importance of respecting international humanitarian law and human rights, reminding of the United Nations Security Council resolution issued on May 17, which calls for accountability for anyone targeting civilians or vital facilities.
