UNHCR: More than 85,000 Syrian Refugees in Jordan Returned to Their Country

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced that more than 85,000 Syrian refugees registered with them in Jordan have returned to Syria since December 2024 until last Tuesday, in a clear indication of the increasing pace of voluntary return following political developments and changes in the country.
UNHCR Representative in Jordan, Maria Stavropoulou, said in an exclusive interview with the website of the Jordanian channel 'Al Mamlaka': The UNHCR has launched a free transportation program since January 2025 in response to the requests of refugees who expressed their intention to return, explaining that the program includes, in addition to free transportation services, medical examinations before departure, individual counseling sessions on the situation in Syria, and available services centers for returnees.
Stavropoulou pointed out that UNHCR supports the voluntary return of refugees 'safely and with dignity', confirming that the initiative aims to empower refugees to make informed decisions, and also includes efforts to provide reliable and updated information about return areas, legal assistance, and ensuring support at crossing points in coordination with the relevant authorities.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi announced yesterday that more than two million Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons have returned to their homes since last December.
