Trump's Envoy Talks About Syrian Developments and Imminent Announcements Regarding 'Abraham Accords' After Paris Meeting

US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, announced that tensions in Syria are escalating, referring to the deadly events that occurred in the province of Suwayda last week. However, he confirmed in an interview with 'Fox News' on Saturday that 'those tensions are already on their way to resolution'.
Witkoff's statements came hours after he hinted at new agreements in the region, stating: 'We believe that we will make some very big announcements regarding the countries that will join the Abraham Accords,' without further details.
In a related context, a meeting was held in Paris on Saturday bringing together delegations from Syria and Israel mediated by the US, according to a Syrian diplomatic source. Syrian state television reported that the meeting discussed activating the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and 'containing the escalation' between the two sides, but did not lead to 'final agreements,' with indications that further meetings are expected in the future.
A diplomatic source in Damascus revealed to 'AFP' last Thursday an unprecedented meeting between Syrian Foreign Minister Asad al-Shaibani and Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer. US Special Envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, also confirmed his meeting with officials from both sides in Paris on the 'X' platform.
This meeting comes in the aftermath of clashes that erupted in Suwayda on July 13, which Israel responded to with airstrikes on sites in southern Syria and Damascus, while Tel Aviv continues to reject any military presence in southern Syria.
On the other hand, the new Syrian authorities _since taking office last December_ have acknowledged engaging in indirect negotiations with Israel to contain the escalation, especially after repeated Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory and military incursions in the south.
Damascus links the new negotiations to a return to the implementation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, which calls for a cessation of hostilities and the deployment of UN forces in the demilitarized buffer zone between the two countries.
