Amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, US President Donald Trump denied the accuracy of media reports suggesting a US plan to financially assist Iran in exchange for giving up uranium enrichment.
Trump, in a post on his platform 'Truth Social,' affirmed that 'the rumors of offering $30 billion to Iran to build non-military nuclear facilities are pure lies and fabrications from fake news media,' emphasizing that he has never heard of this 'ridiculous idea' and describing those reports as 'deception.'
CNN and NBC News revealed in the past two days preliminary proposals discussed by the Trump administration recently, including offering economic incentives to Tehran if it agrees to halt uranium enrichment in its nuclear program.
In response, Trump escalated his rhetoric, once again waving the military option, stating that 'he will return to striking Iran' if it resumes uranium enrichment, in a direct warning reflecting the escalating confrontation between the two sides.
The US President also criticized Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei after the latter declared 'victory in the war,' saying: 'He should thank me for not targeting him. Evil has been defeated.'
Trump demanded Iranian authorities to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency to conduct a full inspection of its nuclear facilities, indicating that Tehran is currently seeking to hold a meeting without providing further details.
It is worth mentioning that Washington and Tehran have been engaged in indirect talks since last April, attempting to reach a new diplomatic formula regarding the Iranian nuclear program, which Iran insists is peaceful, while the United States wants to ensure that Tehran is unable to produce nuclear weapons.
Clashes erupted on June 13 when Israel, a Washington ally, launched a direct attack on Iran, prompting the latter to strike a US base in Qatar, followed by a US attack on nuclear sites inside Iran. A ceasefire was later announced last week through Trump's mediation.
Thus, the Iranian nuclear file seems to be back in the spotlight, amidst mutual skepticism and escalating warnings, as the region and the world await the course of the upcoming negotiations.
