Brazilian goalkeeper Jefferson Merly, star of the Portuguese team GD Caldelas, died in a tragic accident after disappearing under the waters of the Homim River in northwest Portugal.
According to the British newspaper "Daily Mail", Merly (27 years old) disappeared while swimming in the river on Saturday evening around six o'clock, where he suddenly drowned and his body disappeared underwater, before being found after more than three hours at nine-thirty in the evening.
Merly was living in the city of Braga, about a 40-minute drive from the accident site in Terras de Bouro.
His club confirmed in an official statement their deep sorrow over his loss, praising his dedication and professional spirit that he left in the team, expressing their heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
The Brazilian player, who was born in the city of Vista Alegre do Alto in São Paulo state, moved abroad in 2019 to first play with the União team in Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil, then had experiences with clubs in Spain and Portugal before joining Caldelas in 2024 and recently renewing his contract.
This tragic death has left a significant shock in the sports community and highlighted the dangers of swimming in natural places without adequate precautions.
