World Bank Grants Syria $146 Million to Rebuild Electricity Sector

The World Bank has approved a $146 million grant to support the rehabilitation of the electricity sector infrastructure in Syria, aiming to improve energy supplies and enhance economic recovery.
The Bank stated in an official statement that its Executive Directors approved this grant, provided through the International Development Association, to help Syria restore "reliable and affordable electricity supplies," in addition to supporting the struggling economic activity after years of crisis.
The project will focus on repairing damaged infrastructure, including transmission lines and substations, while providing technical support to enhance sector efficiency. It will also fund the rehabilitation of two major high-voltage transmission lines of 400 kilovolts to improve electrical connectivity, along with developing long-term strategies to ensure sector sustainability.
Jean Christophe Carret, World Bank Regional Director for the Middle East, emphasized that this project represents "the first step in enhancing support for Syria towards recovery and development," noting that electricity sector reform is "a vital investment to improve the livelihoods of Syrians" in the reconstruction phase.
