The White House announced today, Wednesday, May 14, the details of the meeting between the American President Donald Trump and his Syrian counterpart Ahmed Al-Shar'a in the Saudi capital Riyadh, with the participation of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan via phone.
The official statement from the White House stated that President Trump assured President Al-Shar'a that he has "a historic opportunity to write a new chapter in Syria's history," emphasizing "the importance of joining the Abraham Accords with Israel and cooperating with the United States to combat the resurgence of 'ISIS'."
On his part, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shar'a pointed out that "the opportunity has arisen with the withdrawal of Iranian forces from Syrian territories," emphasizing "the common interests between Syria and the United States in combating terrorism and eliminating chemical weapons."
The meeting took place within the framework of a quadrilateral meeting involving Trump, Al-Shar'a, and the Saudi Crown Prince, with President Erdogan participating via video link, in the capital Riyadh.
