United Nations Calls on Syrian Government to Take Immediate Steps to Restore Calm in Sweida

Deputy UN Envoy to Syria, Najat Rushdi, urged the Syrian government to take immediate steps to restore calm in Sweida province, which has been witnessing escalation since yesterday, Sunday.

Rushdi expressed concern in a tweet on the "X" platform about reports of "violence and kidnappings in Sweida, resulting in a large number of casualties".

She added: "We urge the Syrian authorities and local authorities to take immediate steps to protect civilians, restore calm, and prevent incitement".

She pointed out the "urgent need for genuine integration, building trust, and meaningful dialogue to advance a reliable and comprehensive political transition process in Syria, based on the principles of independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity".
