The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed today, Saturday, the decision of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to restore the country's membership after the fall of the Assad regime, considering it a step towards returning to the "regional and international communities as a free and just state."
In a statement posted on its "X" platform account, the ministry stated, "It welcomes the decision of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to restore Syria's membership after 13 years of suspension due to the heinous crimes committed by the ousted Assad regime."
It continued, "This decision represents an important step towards Syria's return to the regional and international communities as a free and just state."
The ministry reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to the "principles of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation - Islamic cooperation, justice, and dignity."
It also expressed its readiness to "work alongside our brothers in the Islamic world to rebuild Syria and strengthen our region based on our shared values of justice, peace, and cooperation," as stated in its statement.
It expressed its aspirations to build a future where the Syrian people regain their "deserved status among nations, contributing to a stronger and more united Islamic world."
On Friday, Syria managed to regain its membership in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation with the assistance of Turkey after a 13-year suspension.
During the extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Friday, attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, the issue of Syria's reinstatement to the organization was added to the agenda at Ankara's initiative.
During the meeting, the draft resolution, supported by Turkey, was approved, leading to Syria's restoration of its membership in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation after a suspension that lasted about 13 years.
After the resolution was adopted, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani was invited to attend the meeting and took his place as a representative of his country.
It is worth mentioning that the recommendation to suspend Syria's membership was made on June 24, 2012, during an extraordinary executive committee meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation at the ministerial level in Jeddah, as a result of the escalated violence carried out by the ousted Assad regime against its people at that time.
At the Fourth Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Mecca in August 2012, the suspension of Syria's membership was officially adopted.
