The Journalists Union has announced the opening of membership for those interested in joining, whether through online or paper applications at its main headquarters in Damascus.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Mahmoud Abu Ras, a member of the temporary executive office and the secretary of registration, admission, and professional affairs at the union, stated that the conditions include the applicant holding Syrian nationality and having worked in the journalism field for a minimum of three years in any media sector (audio, print, or visual).
Abu Ras added that the minimum required educational qualification is a high school diploma, with membership grade determined based on years of experience and the journalist's academic qualifications.
Applications can be submitted electronically through the form available on the union's official social media accounts, while paper applications are accepted at the union's headquarters in Damascus for those facing difficulties with online registration.
Abu Ras pointed out that journalists registered with the union before December 8th of last year are required to update their information by filling out the electronic or paper form, while registration is open to those not registered before that date.
The registration and admission committee will review the applications, verify their accuracy, and then inform the applicants of their acceptance or rejection. Upon acceptance, the journalist will be contacted to confirm their membership and undergo a written and oral interview to determine the annual fee payment period and receive the new card, noting that all old cards have been invalidated.
He also mentioned that the application is open to all Syrian journalists working inside or outside the country, provided they meet the mentioned conditions.
Regarding the fees, Abu Ras clarified that a fixed amount has not been determined at this stage, but the subscriptions will vary depending on the nature of the journalist's work (government or private) and their income to ensure cost fairness.
