UN Security Council Holds Session to Discuss Developments in Syria

The UN Security Council is holding its monthly session today, Monday, dedicated to discussing the political and humanitarian developments in Syria, with a special focus on recent events in the province of Al-Suwayda.

During the session, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, and the Director of the Operations and Advocacy Division in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Edem Wosornu, will brief the Council, followed by closed consultations among the members.

The meeting is expected to highlight the violence that erupted on July 13 between fighters from tribes and local factions in Al-Suwayda, before the intensity of the clashes began to decrease in recent days.

This is the second session in which the Council discusses tensions in Al-Suwayda, after Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Mohamed Khaled Al-Khiari, provided an emergency briefing on July 17, reporting hundreds of casualties among military personnel and civilians, including women and children, as well as field executions, widespread displacement, infrastructure damage.

According to "Al-Ocha" website, Wosornu will provide a briefing during the session on the humanitarian situation, focusing on the shortages of water, flour, fuel, and electricity in Al-Suwayda, as well as the arrival of aid convoys to the province, including fuel, food items, wheat flour, medicines, and health supplies.

The source explained that Wosornu will urge member states to contribute to funding the Humanitarian Response Plan for Syria for 2025, which was recently extended at the request of the Resident Coordinator and the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, Adam Abdel-Moula, amid a financial coverage not exceeding 36.6% for the current year.
