The Kurdish National Council in Syria has expressed its firm rejection of the decision by the self-administration affiliated with the Democratic Union Party (PYD) to raise the prices of diesel and gasoline (unleaded) to unprecedented levels, considering the decision as ignoring the suffering of citizens in the administration-controlled areas.

In an official statement, the Council described the decision as "blatant disregard" for people's lives, especially with the significant increase in the price of a liter of diesel to 6200 Syrian pounds (about 55 US cents), after being sold for 30 then 40 cents, without any prior announcement or official explanation from the relevant authorities, indicating - according to the statement - an attempt to "evade accountability."

Deterioration of living conditions and threat to food security

The statement emphasized that the decision comes at a time when the population is facing multiple crises, including power and water cuts, rising food prices, unemployment, increasing economic and social pressures.

The Council warned that the sudden increase in fuel prices, especially diesel, will worsen the crisis in the agricultural sector, already suffering from drought and deterioration, explaining that the operation of irrigation pumps mainly depends on this substance, threatening the strategic wheat crop, which is the cornerstone of food security in northern and eastern Syria.

Rising cost of living and widening poverty

The statement pointed out that the decision led to a wave of inflation affecting food items, bread, medicines, transportation and electricity costs, increasing the suffering of citizens and pushing them further into poverty and deprivation.

Self-administration's responsibility and demands for reversal

The Kurdish National Council held the self-administration fully responsible for the serious repercussions of the decision, demanding its immediate cancellation and dealing with the citizens' needs transparently and responsibly.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to follow up on agreements that serve the Kurdish cause and fulfill the aspirations of the Kurdish people within a unified political vision, rejecting any policies that increase people's suffering or threaten their stability.

Warning of worsening crises

Finally, the statement warned that the self-administration's continued unilateral decision-making without consulting community representatives will exacerbate crises, increase poverty and migration, affirming that the Council will continue to defend the rights of the Kurdish people through peaceful means.
