European Union Welcomes Ceasefire Agreement in Sweida

The European Union welcomed today the agreement on a ceasefire in Sweida, emphasizing the importance of respecting Syria's sovereignty.

The Union's spokesperson, Anwar Al-Announi, stressed the need to fully respect the ceasefire, calling for an immediate halt to all acts of violence, protection of civilians, and immediate steps to prevent incitement and sectarian rhetoric.

The spokesperson noted that the Union calls on Israel and all other foreign actors to respect Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Expressing concern over the hundreds of victims in recent acts of violence, reportedly committed by several armed groups against isolated civilians, he called for holding all perpetrators of serious violations of international humanitarian law accountable and bringing them to justice.

Al-Announi added: "It is time for dialogue and to move forward in a comprehensive transitional process," expressing "the Union's readiness to assist in these efforts and support a peaceful and comprehensive transition process led by Syria and owned by it."

Earlier today, the Syrian Arab Republic announced a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire in Sweida, calling on all parties to adhere to it.
