The significant damages caused by the floods that hit South Africa continue to unfold with each passing hour.
Local authorities say, "Rescue teams have recovered more bodies of flood victims in the Eastern Cape province earlier this week, raising the death toll to at least 86."
Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of the poverty-stricken province, attributed the "tragic disaster" to climate change, explaining that floodwaters rose over 4 meters after heavy rains and fierce winds hit the Eastern Cape.
The mudslides and floodwaters have engulfed thousands of homes, roads, schools, and health facilities. The most affected area by the floods and subsequent mudslides is the city of Mthatha, located about 800 kilometers south of Johannesburg.
Yesterday, Saturday, 3 students were rescued after clinging to trees, but 4 are still missing. According to the Green Climate Fund, South Africa is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate variability and change, increasing the frequency and intensity of severe weather events."
