Syria: Ministry of Economy Obligates Producers and Importers to Specific Standards for Food Products

The Syrian Ministry of Economy and Trade has issued two new decisions to regulate the packaging and wrapping of food products intended for home consumption, in line with the standards specified in Article One of Decision No. /1233/ for the year 2021.
The first decision stipulates that producers and importers of bottled drinking water must use containers with specified net capacities, with an emphasis on the clarity of information for the consumer. The decision also mandates the placement of a label indicating compliance with the Syrian standard specifications for water, ensuring that the net capacity is clearly and easily readable.
As for the second decision, it requires producers and importers of yogurt to use containers with specified net weights, with a necessity to adhere to packaging specifications and clarity of data. It also requires the placement of a label according to the requirements of the Syrian standard specification No. 199 for the year 2019, emphasizing the display of the net weight in a visible and direct manner for the consumer.
These decisions came as part of the ministry's commitment to enhancing transparency and protecting consumer rights, while ensuring that products in the local market comply with the approved standards and specifications.
