South Korea ranks second globally in shipbuilding orders during May.

Shipbuilding sector data today showed that South Korea ranked second globally in new shipbuilding orders during the month of May.
South Korean shipyards received orders totaling 250,000 tons compensatory for eight ships, representing 15% of the global total of 1.66 million tons compensatory last month, according to Clarkson Research Services based in London.
China ranked first with 640,000 tons compensatory for 42 ships, accounting for 39% of the global total.
In terms of order backlog, China led with 96.39 million tons compensatory, or 59% of the global total of 163.44 million tons compensatory by the end of May; while South Korea came in second with 36.3 million tons compensatory, representing 22% of the global total.
Clarkson's index for new shipbuilding prices, a measure of changes in prices of newly built ships, was 186.69 points last month, a decrease of 0.42 points from the previous year.
