Shocking lawsuit against OpenAI: Chatbot accused of causing teenager's death

In a case that has sparked widespread controversy, an American couple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in the California Supreme Court, accusing the chatbot "ChatGPT" of being involved in the suicide of their 16-year-old son.

According to NBC, the 40-page lawsuit includes allegations that the company failed to take necessary measures to protect underage users, noting that the chatbot continued to interact with their son even after he expressed his desire to end his life, without activating any emergency protocol that could have averted the tragedy.

The family believes that "serious flaws" in the program's design and the company's failure to warn about its dangers directly contributed to the tragic incident.

This is not the first case of its kind; in October 2024, CBS reported on a similar lawsuit filed by a father from Florida against Character.AI and Google, accusing their programs of causing the suicide of his 14-year-old son.

The new case puts artificial intelligence companies once again under scrutiny, opening a broad discussion about the limits of their responsibility in protecting users, especially teenagers, from the serious psychological consequences of using this technology.
