In a shocking incident that shook the global sports community, Portuguese star Diogo Jota, striker for English club Liverpool, tragically died alongside his brother in a fatal car accident in northwest Spain on the night of June 25-26, 2025.
According to the Spanish police, preliminary investigations indicate that the main cause of the accident was speeding.
The police explained that the forensic report is still under study and will focus specifically on the "effects left by one of the car's tires," although "all indications point to a significant exceedance of the allowed speed limit."
Sources indicated that Jota was the one driving the car, a Lamborghini, at the time of the accident.
The car overturned while he and his brother were heading to the port of Santander, where they were supposed to board a sea trip to Britain, after doctors advised Jota to avoid air travel due to a recent lung surgery.
In a poignant scene, Liverpool stars gathered in the small Portuguese town of Gondomar on Saturday to attend the funeral of their late teammate.
Among those present were team captain Virgil van Dijk, goalkeeper Alisson Becker, new coach Arne Slot, as well as several current and former players of the club.
The sudden death sparked a wave of sadness in football circles, with demands for accountability for those who were absent from the funeral, including Luis Diaz, who was absent due to attending an "entertainment event," causing widespread controversy and anger among Liverpool fans, although he later expressed deep regret, saying: "I will never forget Jota's stance with me."
On the other hand, Manchester United showed a wonderful humanitarian gesture towards their Portuguese players, granting Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot special permission to travel to Portugal to participate in the funeral in solidarity with their late teammate.
The Gold Cup tournament also witnessed a touching moment when Mexican star Raul Jimenez celebrated his goal against America in a tribute to Jota, in a humane expression of the shared sorrow that engulfed football fields after the tragedy.
