Oman Successfully Conducts First Awake Craniotomy Surgery to Remove Brain Tumor

A specialized medical team at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital in the Medical City in the Sultanate of Oman has successfully performed the first of its kind surgery to remove a brain tumor using the "Awake Craniotomy" technique, which is among the most advanced and complex brain and nerve surgeries in the world.
The surgery was supervised by Dr. Ghasan bin Salem Al Sadeeri, a senior consultant in brain and nerve surgery, with the participation of a complete team of Omani professionals in various specialties. The operation took several hours, during which the patient remained fully awake to interact with the medical team through precise nerve tests, contributing to the complete removal of the tumor without any complications or side effects on nerve functions.
The "Awake Craniotomy" technique is used in cases of tumors near brain areas responsible for speech, movement, or cognition, where vital monitoring of the patient's nerve functions during surgery is required to avoid any damage to these sensitive areas.
According to the Omani News Agency, this achievement represents a qualitative leap in the development of the Omani healthcare system, highlighting the capability of national cadres and healthcare institutions to keep pace with the latest global medical advancements. It also embodies the vision of the Medical City in achieving medical leadership regionally and globally, through the use of advanced technologies and empowering local competencies.
