Mikhael Ounmacht: European bloc to enhance cooperation with the new Syrian government

Mikael Onmacht, the head of the European Union mission to Syria, announced the EU's readiness to enhance cooperation with the Syrian government and provide support in facing national challenges and priorities. He expressed his conviction that the current authorities are working for the citizens, unlike the previous regime that lacked the genuine will to support the people.
Onmacht, speaking to "Syria TV," added that the EU's policy towards Damascus has undergone a radical shift after the fall of the "criminal regime," leading to official relations with the new government, including regular meetings with Syrian officials. The EU described this government as a "pivotal step towards rebuilding Syria."
The head of the mission emphasized that the EU's presence in the country has evolved from direct humanitarian work to effective political engagement with the Syrian authorities.
Regarding sanctions, Onmacht clarified that their goal is "not to harm Syrians," indicating that sanctions targeting individuals will remain in place, especially those related to crimes and violations. Humanitarian exemptions have been introduced since early 2023, later expanded to include vital sectors like energy and the banking system.
The head of the mission also mentioned that the European Union is collaborating with the UNHCR on the issue of Syrian refugees, emphasizing the vital role of civil society in this field.
