Mazloum Abdi: The Historic March Agreement Achieves a Ceasefire and Unites Syria

The Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, described the March 10, 2025 agreement as preventing sectarian and ethnic tensions from turning into a new civil war, noting that it paves the way for the reunification of Syria after years of division and conflict. This came during a special interview with the Turkish newspaper "Yeni Yaşam," where he confirmed that the country is witnessing a significant geopolitical transformation since the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, moving from the Iranian and Russian axis to an opposition axis.
Abdi clarified that the agreement with Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara resulted from a series of meetings that began in Damascus in late 2024, but initially did not yield results, before a mediation by American and British civil society organizations succeeded in reaching its signing. The agreement is based on a comprehensive ceasefire across all Syrian territories and a general framework for the reunification of the country after it was divided among four conflicting authorities, leaving details such as the management of areas and the Kurdish issue for later negotiations.
Abdi pointed out that the centralized totalitarian regime is no longer sustainable after a 14-year war, calling for the establishment of a decentralized system that ensures the participation of all Syrian components in the political and administrative process.
On another note, Abdi revealed supportive logistical roles from the United States during the visit of the SDF delegation to Damascus, despite its lack of direct participation in the talks. He also noted that Turkey did not obstruct the agreement, with positive communication existing with it, confirming that the SDF does not rule out integration into a unified Syrian army in the future.
He added that countries like the United States, France, and Britain continue their dialogue with the new Syrian government, indicating serious international interest in supporting a comprehensive political settlement that ends the conflict and opens a new chapter in Syria's history.
