Israeli Foreign Ministry: Retaining the Golan Heights is a Basic Condition for Normalization with Syria

The Israeli Foreign Minister, Gabi Ashkenazi, said that any potential peace agreement or normalization with Syria must be built on a basic foundation, which is the retention of the Golan Heights under Israeli sovereignty, noting that this position is non-negotiable.
The statements of the Israeli minister came during an interview on the Hebrew channel "I24News", in which he discussed the recent military developments against Iran and their regional implications, including on the Syrian issue.
Ashkenazi explained that Israel does not object in principle to engaging in negotiations with Syria, but he emphasized at the same time that "any future peace agreement or normalization must occur while the Golan is in our hands".
The Israeli minister stressed that "I emphasize this point - with the Golan, there is no compromise on this matter".
He pointed out that "if Syria recognizes Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, that would be the basis for an acceptable agreement", adding that "but we are not at that stage yet, and we are still monitoring developments".
