The local prosecutor's office announced the killing of one person and the injury of several others, including two municipal police officers with serious wounds, in a knife attack that took place on Saturday afternoon, 22/02/2025, in the city of Mâcon, eastern France.

The mayor of Mâcon, Michel Lutz, described the incident as "terror that has gripped the city," indicating that investigations suggest it may be a terrorist act, pending judicial confirmation.

French President Emmanuel Macron also described the attack as an "undeniably Islamist terrorist act," affirming the solidarity of the French nation.

The channel reported that the suspect has been arrested, and the motive or identity of the perpetrator is not yet clear, while the prosecutor's office for counterterrorism has taken over the investigation.

According to the French television channel "BFM," the suspect is an Algerian born in 1987, listed in the file of combating extremism (FSPRT) and subject to an order to leave French territory (OQTF), and is under house arrest pending several judicial decisions.

The French prosecutor told "AFP" that the attack, which occurred on the sidelines of a demonstration, is suspected to have been carried out by the perpetrator - who shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the attack - listed on the "terrorist" list.
