The European Union's asylum agency announced today, Monday, a decrease in the number of asylum applications submitted by Syrians to EU countries, reaching the lowest level in over a decade in February. According to the European agency data cited by "AFP," "Syrians submitted 5,000 asylum applications in the twenty-seven EU countries, as well as Switzerland and Norway, during February, a 34% decrease compared to the previous month." EU Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, stated: "The recent asylum figures highlight the importance of stability in other regions for Europe." The twenty-seven EU countries, along with Switzerland and Norway, received about 69,000 asylum applications in February, marking a downward trend that began in October 2024, as reported by the asylum agency. Syrians, who previously constituted the largest number of applicants, ranked third in February, with France topping the list of receiving countries, followed by Spain, then Germany, which had been the primary destination for Syrians for many years.
