President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey held talks with his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Shara in Istanbul on Saturday. The state-owned channel "TRT" aired images of Shara shaking hands with the Turkish president in his office at Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul. Earlier, Erdogan urged the Syrian government to focus on its agreement with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) supported by the United States, which involves their integration into the Syrian armed forces, and called on Damascus to implement it. Speaking to journalists aboard a plane from Budapest, Erdogan stated that Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and the United States have formed a committee to discuss the fate of ISIS fighters in detention camps in northeastern Syria, managed by the SDF for years. Erdogan's office quoted the president as saying: "We closely follow the issue of the Kurdish People's Protection Units in particular. It is important that the Damascus administration does not divert its attention from this matter." He also emphasized that Iraq should focus on the issue of the camps because most women and children in the Al-Hol camp are Syrians and Iraqis who should be repatriated.
