President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey called on the European Union today, Friday, to lift sanctions on Syria and support reconstruction efforts. The Anadolu Agency quoted Erdogan as saying in his speech today during the general session of the sixth summit of the "European Political Group" in the Albanian capital Tirana: "President Donald Trump's decision to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria is an extremely valuable step towards achieving prosperity there as soon as possible." Erdogan added: "With this decision, President Trump once again demonstrated his interest in achieving stability and development in the region, and we hope that this move will serve as a model for other countries to follow." Erdogan expressed his hope that "the European Union will take the initiative to lift sanctions imposed on the previous regime without delay, and provide the necessary financial support for reconstruction efforts," noting that this will contribute to accelerating the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of Syrians abroad to their homes.
