Damascus Governorate: Transfer of Waste Dump from Bab Sharqi to Alternative Site

The governorate explained in a statement today, Wednesday, through its Telegram channel that the decision to transfer the dump came in response to the repeated complaints of residents, their daily suffering from foul odors, and the inappropriate appearance resulting from the dump's presence behind a mosque and in front of a church and religious complex. This has made it an environmental and social nuisance, especially in a neighborhood considered one of the oldest in Damascus, despite residents' demands to relocate it for over 30 years during the rule of the deposed regime that did not respond.
The governorate emphasized that, based on its responsibility to serve citizens and maintain the city's civilized appearance, it affirms its commitment to achieving a clean and healthy environment that respects the place's privacy and the importance of heritage, prioritizing the maintenance of old neighborhoods from any aspect that detracts from their historical character.
The governorate also indicated that the implementation of the dump transfer operations will be carried out under its direct supervision, with intensive efforts made by the sanitation directorate according to an organized work program that ensures the task is completed smoothly and efficiently.
