Damascus Governorate Announces a New Phase to Improve Traffic Flow

The Damascus Governorate has begun implementing a new phase of the traffic improvement project in the capital, in collaboration with the Traffic Engineering and Transport Directorate and relevant authorities. The direction of traffic on Cairo and Ibn Asakir streets has been unified to become one-way, as part of efforts to reduce congestion and enhance road safety.
The governorate clarified that Cairo Street in the industrial area has become one-way from the intersection of the Public Transport Authority in New Zahra to the Nidal Club junction, while Ibn Asakir Street has been converted to one-way from the club junction to Bab Musalla roundabout. This step follows the first phase, which included the Corniche Al-Midan and Old Zahra streets.
Project officials urged drivers to adhere to the signage and traffic signs to ensure the success of the new measures, emphasizing that this plan is part of a comprehensive vision to address the worsening traffic congestion in the capital.
It is noted that traffic congestion in Damascus is exacerbated by several factors, including the spread of random street vendors and mobile sellers who "occupy the sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to walk in the middle of the roads, which hinders vehicle movement," according to official sources. Additionally, the decline in public transport efficiency due to fuel shortages has increased reliance on private vehicles, further straining road infrastructure.
Through these measures, the Damascus Governorate aims to tackle the daily challenges faced by residents and services, relying on future planning and coordination between government institutions and the local community to find sustainable solutions to the traffic crisis.
