India announced the killing of five of its soldiers in a clash with Pakistani forces, while confirming that it had killed several suspected militants in military strikes targeting Pakistan. This comes after four days of intense clashes between the two nuclear-armed countries, with both sides nearing an all-out war following attacks using drones and missiles on military sites. However, on Saturday, an agreement to cease fire was reached through U.S. mediation, as reported by Bloomberg. Despite reports of violations of the ceasefire in the early hours after its announcement, the ceasefire appeared to hold on Sunday. Over the past few days, India and Pakistan have exchanged accusations of escalating tensions along the disputed borders in Kashmir, where these clashes included attacks on residential areas and non-disputed cities, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands of residents. The recent tensions began on April 22 after an attack that killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists in the Indian Jammu and Kashmir region, with India accusing Pakistan of involvement in the attack, a claim Islamabad denied. Despite the ceasefire announcement, the joy of residents in the affected areas was short-lived, as many returned home only to find their houses destroyed and uninhabitable, leaving them uncertain about the future. Basharath Ahmed, a local resident, warned that returning to normal life amidst these tensions would only be possible if complete calm is achieved, indicating that war could erupt again at any moment. It is worth noting that the ceasefire aimed to calm the most dangerous military confrontation between India and Pakistan in decades, but tensions persist, with both sides continuing to exchange accusations of violating the agreement.
