Both China and Russia, permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, announced their support for Iran's position rejecting a European move to reimpose UN sanctions that had been lifted ten years ago under the nuclear agreement signed in 2015.
This support came in an official letter signed by the foreign ministers of the three countries, who considered that the "European troika" – Britain, France, and Germany – activating the "snapback sanctions" mechanism is legally and procedurally flawed, and constitutes an abuse of the powers of the UN Security Council.
The letter, published today Monday via the "X" platform by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, confirmed that the European path lacks any legal basis and is politically destructive amid the escalating tensions surrounding the Iranian nuclear file.
This escalation comes after Iran has long exceeded the restrictions imposed on uranium production, considering that the United States' withdrawal from the agreement in 2018 grants it the right to do so. The nuclear agreement is expected to expire next October, opening the door for the reactivation of international sanctions.
In light of these developments, Iran held talks with the European troika countries in Geneva, aiming to reach a new nuclear agreement, following attacks targeting Iranian nuclear facilities last June. However, the Europeans considered that the talks did not demonstrate a genuine Iranian readiness to reach a settlement.
