Chinese President Xi Jinping and American President Donald Trump held a phone call today, Thursday, according to the official Chinese media, amid trade and diplomatic tensions between the two superpowers.

The Chinese news agency "Xinhua" reported that the call took place "at the request of the American President," without providing further details.

The call comes as the world's two largest economies exchange accusations of violating the agreement they reached in May, which had put a ceasefire in their trade tariff war initiated by the American President.

Trump wrote on "Truth Social" platform on Wednesday: "I like President Xi, always have, and always will, but he is very tough, and it is very difficult to reach an agreement with him!!!"

Upon returning to the White House in January, Trump imposed new and high tariffs on many of his country's imports and those of many countries, especially China.
