The British government has lifted sanctions imposed on 24 Syrian entities, including several banks such as the Central Bank, as well as oil companies, as reported in a document published on the website of the British Treasury Department. According to the website, sanctions have been lifted on several oil companies including "Al Furat," "Deir Al Zour," "Ebla," the General Petroleum Corporation, "Fuel," "Syrian Oil Transport Company," and "Syrian Oil Company," in addition to "Homs Refinery Company" and "Baniyas Refinery Company." As reported by the "TASS" agency, sanctions have been lifted on Syrian Arab Airlines, as well as 8 banks including the Industrial Bank and the Commercial Bank of Syria. The European Union agreed to suspend a set of sanctions imposed on Syria, including those related to energy, transportation, and construction, during an extensive European meeting held in Brussels last month. The Union announced in a statement the lifting of sanctions on the energy and transportation sectors, as well as 4 Syrian banks, in addition to Syrian Arab Airlines. Restrictions on the Central Bank of Syria were also eased, and an indefinite exemption was granted to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. Meanwhile, the Union maintained a set of other sanctions related to the authorities of the Bashar al-Assad regime, including those imposed on arms trade, dual-use goods for military and civilian purposes, surveillance programs, and international trade in Syrian cultural heritage goods. European ministers confirmed that they will continue to monitor the situation in Syria to ensure the suitability of lifting sanctions.
