In a thrilling incident, the detention of the American YouTuber, Mikhailo Viktorovich Poliakov, aged 24, was extended in India after attempting to enter the forbidden North Sentinel Island to communicate with the isolated Sentinelese tribe. He was arrested on March 31st after trying to visit the island, known as one of the most remote places in the world, where its inhabitants reject any contact with outsiders. Poliakov, from Scottsdale, Arizona, faces charges of violating Indian laws prohibiting approaching the island within a distance of less than 5 kilometers. The penalty for this violation could lead to a five-year prison sentence and a fine. He tried to interact with the tribe by leaving them a gift of a "Diet Cola" bottle and a coconut after failing to communicate directly with them. He filmed a video of the island, collected sand samples, and then returned to his boat. However, his actions raised suspicions among some local fishermen who informed the authorities, leading to his arrest in Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located approximately 1207 kilometers east of mainland India. An Indian police official stated that Poliakov's trip may have been an adventure for him, but it posed a real danger to the lives of the Sentinelese tribe, who live in complete isolation and attack anyone approaching their shores. Mikhailo had attempted to visit the island twice before his latest attempt, which showed courageous behavior but blatantly violated the laws. He is expected to appear before a local court on April 29th, where the judiciary will decide his fate after the long time spent in prison. Earlier this week, a U.S. consulate official visited Poliakov in prison, but Indian authorities continue to investigate the incident, emphasizing that contact with these tribes could threaten their stability and endanger their lives.
