Meanwhile, the US State Department said that Rubio discussed with Al-Shaibani the previous American steps to lift sanctions on Syria, and pledged to maintain sanctions imposed on what he called "malicious entities," including the ousted President Bashar al-Assad and his associates.
The American Minister expressed hope that these steps would represent a new era for the Syrian people and US-Syrian relations. The two sides also discussed various issues such as counterterrorism, Iran, Syrian-Israeli relations, and the elimination of remnants of the Assad regime's chemical weapons program.
President Trump signed an executive order lifting sanctions on Syria to support the country's path towards stability and peace, while keeping sanctions in place on Assad and his associates.
