On Thursday, September 4, NBC News revealed that former U.S. President Joe Biden recently underwent surgery to remove cancerous cells from his skin, noting that he is recovering well, according to a spokesperson.
The procedure performed on Biden (82 years old) is considered a common procedure to treat the most prevalent type of skin cancer, and it came after months of his announcement in May about his diagnosis of prostate cancer.
His medical team explained at the time that the disease is aggressive but responsive to hormonal treatment, giving him a good chance of responding to therapy.
Biden underwent a routine medical examination in 2023, during his presidency, which resulted in the removal of a skin lesion later identified as basal cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer.
According to those close to him, Biden remains optimistic about recovery and continues to take medication designated for hormonal treatment as part of a treatment plan to combat the disease.
* Sudden withdrawal and limited appearance
Biden's physical and mental health has always been under intense scrutiny during his presidency.
He surprised the political circles in July 2024 by announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race after a disastrous performance in a crucial debate against current President Donald Trump, raising widespread concern within the Democratic Party.
Biden, who made history as the oldest president of the United States when elected in 2020, lost his title to Trump, who was over 79 years old when he won the last presidential election in 2024.
Since leaving the White House, Biden has reduced his public appearances, but he made a rare appearance in a speech where he strongly defended the social security program, criticizing the Trump administration's proposals to cut its funding.
