The Turkish Minister of Transport announced the start date of flights from Ankara and Sabiha airports to the Syrian capital, Damascus, in a move considered the first of its kind in over a decade. Minister Abdulkadir Önal Oğlu stated that "AJet" company will commence its first flight from Sabiha Gökçen Airport on April 21, while flights from Ankara will begin on the 22nd of the same month. Tickets for the flights are now available for sale, as reported by Turkish media. Minister Önal Oğlu recalled connecting Syria to the world through launching Istanbul-Damascus flights on January 23, 2025, adding: "Now, AJet is launching flights to Damascus from Sabiha Gökçen Airport on the Asian side of Istanbul, and from Ankara." The Minister confirmed that flights from Sabiha Gökçen Airport to Damascus will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, while Ankara-Damascus flights will start on April 22, with three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. He further stated: "In the future, we aim to increase the number of flights according to demand and operational compatibility." It is worth mentioning that earlier this month, Turkey announced its participation in the efforts to rehabilitate Damascus International Airport, focusing on enhancing air navigation security and improving technical aspects at the airport.
