Mohammad Al-Jafal, head of the technical delegation and deputy director of the Arab Affairs Department at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, met with a number of Syrian academics residing in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, as part of the ministry's commitment to strengthening relations with Syrian expatriates.

Al-Jafal praised the positive role of the Syrian community in representing the homeland and enhancing its image, affirming that "the new Syrian state prioritizes serving citizens and providing necessary support in various fields."

The head of the delegation also reviewed the main issues discussed with Libyan officials, represented by the Presidential Council, the Government of National Unity, and the Supreme State Council, where mechanisms for restoring diplomatic representation between the two countries were discussed, in line with the reopening of the Syrian embassy in Tripoli.

Al-Jafal revealed that the delegation conducted approximately 10,000 operations during its four-day visit, including extending passports for one year free of charge, granting transit tickets for voluntary return to the homeland, and certifying documents. He added that the mission will continue to provide consular services after the reopening of the Syrian embassy in the coming weeks, urging community members to "be reassured and not to be swayed by misleading and false news."

Al-Jafal expressed his appreciation for "the Libyan people's embrace of the Syrian people throughout the years of the revolution," praising the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs' decision to exempt all Syrians from penalties, whether residents or departing. He also mentioned a package of proposals to enhance bilateral relations, including "mutual visa exemption, inviting Libyan investors to Damascus, and establishing a joint working mechanism between the two countries."

For their part, the attendees expressed their gratitude to the technical delegation for this initiative, appreciating the efforts of the Syrian state in following up on their affairs and providing ongoing support.

It is worth noting that the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously confirmed that the delegation's visit aims to resolve the legal status of Syrian citizens in Libya and provide urgent consular services free of charge, in preparation for the upcoming opening of the Syrian embassy in Tripoli.
