Astronaut Sunita Williams returned to Earth less than two weeks ago, but her appearance upon return has caught the attention of many.
On March 18, she and her colleague Butch Wilmore landed off the coast of Florida after spending 288 days in space aboard the International Space Station. When she emerged from the "SpaceX Dragon" capsule, her face showed extreme fatigue and noticeable thinness, raising questions about her health.
However, in her first appearance post-return, lung specialist Vinay Guptha confirmed that Sunita's features had noticeably changed. Her face appeared fuller and less gaunt, reflecting the beginning of her recovery in Earth's gravity.
Guptha noted that her body had begun to regain its natural balance, with her metabolism recovering its efficiency, and she started getting better sleep, which helped improve her health.
Nevertheless, the photos taken of her after landing showed her thin face with prominent wrinkles and gray hair, clear signs of the effects of space on her body. Doctors also pointed out her wrists, which appeared significantly thinner, indicating rapid weight loss and muscle atrophy due to living in a gravity-free environment.
It was expected that astronauts would need a long recovery period after returning, up to 1.5 times the mission duration. However, Guptha indicated that Sunita and Wilmore would need about six weeks of rehabilitation to regain their physical fitness after living in space for a long period. While their bodies are still in the recovery phase, Sunita has started regaining some of her weight, making her look healthier and more vibrant.
Sunita herself described her recovery as a "miracle," despite the challenges she faced during the nine months in space, especially regarding her diet. She suffered severe weight loss due to the difficulty of maintaining a balanced diet in space. NASA made significant efforts to prevent further weight loss.
In Guptha's discussion of the diet, he mentioned that Sunita is a vegetarian, which may be one of the factors affecting her health. The first meal she had after returning was a grilled cheese sandwich, which may explain the difference between her condition and that of her colleague Wilmore, who maintained his weight and skin color throughout the trip.
Sunita and Wilmore were supposed to spend only eight days on the International Space Station, but due to serious technical issues in the "Boeing Starliner" spacecraft, the return to Earth was delayed, forcing them to stay in space for nine months. Although the long space travel left its mark on their bodies, Sunita's speedy recovery after return gives hope for her full health recovery soon.
