In a new development in the relations between Washington and Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that his recent call with US President Donald Trump was the most productive and beneficial since the beginning of the war with Russia.
Zelensky, in his recorded nightly address on Saturday, stated that the conversation that took place on July 4 was the most productive so far, emphasizing that it mainly addressed air defense issues. He expressed gratitude for Trump's willingness to help, and affirmed that the 'Patriot' system is a key asset in facing ballistic threats.
Trump, on his part, told reporters that he discussed with Zelensky the possibility of providing Ukraine with additional air defense systems, including the 'Patriot', stating that these systems are strongly desired by the Ukrainian side and that Washington is currently considering this request.
Despite these positive statements, on July 2, the 'New York Times' reported that the US administration plans to suspend some military aid to Kyiv, including 'Patriot' missiles, guided ammunition, 'Hellfire' missiles, 'Stinger' portable systems, as well as several other weapons.
In his remarks on July 3, Trump emphasized that the United States will continue to support Ukraine militarily, but will take into account its internal weapons needs in light of the tense global situation.
Meanwhile, 'Axios' reported that during his call with Zelensky, Trump expressed his desire to continue American support to enhance Ukrainian air defense capabilities, a move that could pave the way for a different direction if he wins the upcoming elections.
