Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged his allies to expedite the imposition of new sanctions on Russia following Moscow's intensive attack that lasted late into the night, with around 18 missiles and 400 drones launched on several areas in Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Poltava, and Kharkiv.
Zelensky stated on social media: "Sanctions must be imposed more quickly, and pressure on Russia must be strong enough to make it bear the consequences of its terrorism".
In a related context, the United States has resumed supplying Ukraine with some weapons, including 155mm shells and guided ammunition for rocket launchers, after a period of suspending military aid stored in Poland.
These developments come amidst the ongoing Russian invasion, now in its fortieth month, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Yermak announcing that Zelensky will hold meetings with American officials in Rome during a conference focusing on the short and long-term reconstruction of Ukraine.
Yermak emphasized that "the main focus will be on the sanctions policy and the adoption of the next package of American sanctions in the near future".
Simultaneously, U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed the military support for Ukraine, while also ensuring to meet the United States' own weapons needs.
These developments reflect escalating tensions and the continuation of the conflict marked by waves of military and diplomatic escalation.
