Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he held a "fruitful" meeting in Kyiv with US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg, discussing ways to enhance defense cooperation, counter ongoing Russian attacks, and the sanctions imposed on Moscow.
Zelensky stated on the "Telegram" platform that he discussed with Kellogg the path to achieving peace, exploring practical steps to bring it closer. This includes strengthening Ukrainian air defenses, joint production, purchasing weapons in cooperation with Europe, as well as discussing sanctions on Russia and its supporters.
Kellogg's visit to Kyiv coincided with US President Donald Trump's announcement that the United States will send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine to support them in countering continuous Russian attacks.
Trump explained on Sunday that these systems will be sent as part of an agreement involving NATO, which will cover the costs of American weapons directed to Ukraine.
He emphasized that his country will provide these systems due to Ukraine's urgent need, without specifying the quantity or delivery schedule.
Andriy Yermak, Zelensky's office director, welcomed the US envoy's visit on "Telegram," emphasizing that Russia is not seeking a ceasefire and that the principle of "peace through strength" adopted by President Trump is an approach supported by Kyiv.
Analysts viewed Trump's statements as a significant shift in his position towards the Ukrainian crisis, especially coming just two weeks after Washington announced the suspension of some arms shipments to Kyiv.
On the other hand, Moscow stated that it fully understands that American arms supplies to Ukraine are ongoing and will continue in the future, indicating continued Western support for Kyiv despite fluctuating positions within the United States.
