Wide Controversy Surrounding the 'Martyrs Statue' in Aleppo... What's the Story?

A wide controversy erupted on social media as well as in Syrian societal circles regarding the destruction of the 'Martyrs Statue' in Saadallah al-Jabiri Square in the center of Aleppo. This was said to be an attempt to relocate it in a manner described as 'haphazard and unprofessional'.
A widely circulated video clip in the past few hours showed an attempt, last Wednesday evening, to mechanically move the statue using lifting and pulling equipment, resulting in the top part being shattered and falling to the ground.
Following the spread of the video clip, Syrians criticized the relocation idea that led to the destruction of the statue, which holds symbolism for the city's residents, while others considered the destruction to be deliberate.
The Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in Aleppo stated in a clarifying statement published on the official Aleppo Governorate accounts that they relocated the 'Martyrs Statue' to another location to preserve it and its artistic value, intending to later restore and maintain it by specialized technicians.
They considered this action necessary to prepare the square for events and popular activities, especially after the statue partially obstructed the view of the main screen recently installed in the square.
The Directorate's discussion about relocating the statue was met with disapproval from Syrians after the statue appeared shattered in the square according to images and videos, while others demanded that the city council transparently investigate the incident, hold those responsible accountable, and reinstall the statue to its original state due to its significance in the city's memory.
