Airline employees have long warned of the necessity to turn off phones or put them in airplane mode, claiming that failing to do so could cause issues during takeoff. But is there really a risk?
According to Dr. and pilot trainer Gary Cox, who has over 7000 flight hours, the answer is "absolutely nothing at all."
However, experts recommend putting phones in airplane mode as a precautionary measure.
In a popular TikTok video, retired American fighter pilot Birch Point explained that even if phones are not in airplane mode, the plane will not crash, and major issues in aviation systems will not occur.
But if many passengers try to make phone calls during the flight, phone signals may interfere with the pilots' headsets, causing potentially annoying interference, especially when receiving instructions from air traffic control, which is crucial during takeoff and landing.
The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed that mobile phones can be used as long as they do not affect safety systems or communications.
While there have been no documented cases where not putting the phone in airplane mode caused an accident, the ban on using mobile phones on board is based on concerns that phone signals may interfere with vital aircraft systems.
So, although not putting the phone in airplane mode does not lead to a disaster, precaution remains important to ensure a calm and safe flight.
