In a mysterious incident that sparked wide controversy, the Egyptian Ministry of Interior revealed new details about the death of former MP Abdel-Hamid El-Sheikh, whose body was found inside his apartment in Menoufia Governorate in the north of the country, with multiple stab wounds.
The incident began on June 10th last year when Tala Police Station received a report of finding the parliamentarian's body inside his home.
Two of his relatives stated that they had tried to contact him several times without response, which led them to seek the help of a carpenter to break the apartment's door, where they discovered the body and a sharp kitchen tool next to it.
The Ministry of Interior clarified in an official statement that the deceased was living alone, suffering from a mental illness, and taking antidepressant medications, some of which were found at the scene of the incident.
The investigations also revealed that all his belongings were present, and the apartment's exits were intact, with no signs of violence or forced entry.
Evidence also showed the presence of a handwritten 8-page letter, believed to be written by him, explaining his intention to commit suicide.
The preliminary examination of the body revealed the presence of stab wounds, some of which do not suggest a single perpetrator, prompting the Public Prosecution to appoint a forensic doctor to conduct an autopsy to determine the real cause of death.
On the other hand, the MP's wife, Dr. Duaa Mahmoud, cast doubt on the causes of death, stating in local media interviews that there are many question marks surrounding the incident, especially after the appearance of stab marks on his body.
She demanded a full disclosure of the incident, pointing out that he held a high position in a political party.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that investigations are ongoing, awaiting the official forensic report that will settle the debate on whether the death was a result of suicide or if there is a possible criminal suspicion.
