The US State Department began on Friday laying off more than 1350 employees working in the United States as President Donald Trump's administration continues with a reform operation for the diplomatic corps, a move unprecedented, critics say, that will undermine American interests abroad.
An internal notice sent to employees by the State Department stated that the layoffs include 1107 civil service employees and 246 diplomatic corps employees within the country.
The notice added: "The Department is streamlining internal operations to focus on diplomatic priorities... Staff reduction operations were carefully designed to include non-essential positions and redundant or unnecessary offices".
