The United Nations issued an urgent warning yesterday, Tuesday, regarding the expected expansion of Israeli military operations within the Gaza Strip, warning of "catastrophic consequences" that could threaten the lives of millions of Palestinians, and calling for preventing Israel from fully occupying the Palestinian territory.
During a Security Council meeting, Miroslav Jenca, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas, stated that expanding the scope of the war does not constitute a solution to the conflict in Gaza or the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
He added that continued escalation could increase the risk of losing the lives of hostages held inside Gaza, emphasizing that "Israel must be prevented from fully occupying the territory."
In contrast, a senior official in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office revealed on Monday that he is leaning towards a new escalation, as he is heading towards expanding the attack and taking full control of Gaza, especially after indirect ceasefire talks and prisoner exchanges reached a deadlock, according to Channel 12 Israel.
Officials close to Netanyahu confirmed that the occupation of the territory has become a critical matter, indicating that operations will also include areas where hostages are held, and added that any refusal by the Chief of Staff of the Israeli army to this decision could lead to his resignation.
However, other sources denied reports that Netanyahu had made his final decision regarding the continuation of operations, according to the newspaper “Maariv,” reflecting a state of ambiguity in the Israeli position.
These developments come amid stalled negotiations for prisoner exchanges and a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, with both sides sticking to their conditions, complicating the scene and threatening to extend the circle of conflict.
