Amid escalating tensions in southern Lebanon, the head of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) called for creating a conducive environment for a sustainable and long-term political solution, emphasizing that "the path to peace in the south is distinctly political."
His remarks were made during a ceremony held at UNIFIL's headquarters in Naqoura to mark the "International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers."
The event was attended by representatives of the Lebanese army, security agencies, political and religious officials, as well as ambassadors and officials from the United Nations.
In his speech, he stressed that "the situation along the Blue Line remains tense and unpredictable, with repeated violations, and the fear that any mistake could have dire consequences," warning of the possibility of wider confrontations if the escalation is not contained.
He added that UNIFIL's coordination mechanisms provide a channel for dialogue and assistance in calming tensions, laying the possible foundations for any forthcoming solution.
He noted that one of the significant recent steps in southern Lebanon was the deployment of more units of the Lebanese army in the region, considering this presence as "the only guarantor of the state's authority and security," urging the international community to continue supporting and enhancing the capabilities of the Lebanese army.
During the ceremony, flower wreaths were laid in honor of peacekeepers who lost their lives while performing their duties, in the presence of a representative of the Lebanese Army Commander, Brigadier General Nicolas Tabet.
He said, "Today we honor their sacrifices and reaffirm our commitment to peacekeeping. Their legacy will remain the cornerstone of our work and will inspire all who wear the blue helmet."
In conclusion, he emphasized the importance of continuing cooperation among all parties to achieve a more stable and peaceful future not only for southern Lebanon but for the entire region, saying, "As we celebrate the 77th anniversary of peacekeeping operations, let us together renew our commitment to a future of security for all who live on the frontlines and in the southern territories."
